Turtle Presention

It took longer then we thought but we finally got our sea turtle presentation done! Girls learned computer skills putting together "Did you Know?" information for the display and they paper pieced sea creatures to illustrate the display with the help of Mrs. Howard.

This conculdes are requirements for our sea turtle badge. I will forward our pictures to council office in order to order the badge.

Dance Dance Dance

While we were working on our dance badge we let the girls get nice and crazy to show us what they could do!

Badge Update

Girls have so far this year completed their:

- Swim Badge

- Wildlife Badge

- Dance Badge

We are nearing completion of our:

- Sea Turtle Badge (just need to finish our hallway display that we started on at our last meeting)

We will be starting our:

- Sports Sampler Badge

I apologize for not getting the badges out in a timely manner. I have had the swim badge, which I hope to get out at our next meeting and have ordered the others, as soon as they come in I will make sure to hand them out.

Sea Turtle Display

As part of our final requirements for the Sea Turtle Badge our troop has to put together a school display. Mr. Gruel has very kindly given the Girl Scouts the use of the display cabinets in the front hallway during the month of December for the display.

We are asking all girls to submit one item to go inside the display case related to Sea Turtles. It could be a turtle painting with some facts, a small display with ideas to help sea turtles, a sketch of a sea turtle with all parts labeled. Anything related to educating the school about sea turtles would be perfect. Parents are encouraged to work on this with their daughter.

Originally we had asked for all items to be submitted by this Friday (Dec. 3rd) but we will take them on Monday, Dec. 6th as well.

My Heritage Badge

Here is a badge we thought that girls might enjoy working on their own to earn. Click on the picture to see the requirements in a larger screen.

Field Trip - Saturday, Nov. 13th

As a reminder we have a field trip to Hilton Head Island this Saturday, November 13th as part of our wildlife badge.

Paperwork went home with girls and will need to be returned signed by a parent or guardian.

We will leave from Mossy Oaks Elementary School at 9 a.m. (the program starts at 10 a.m. on HHI). We should return to the school between 3 - 3:30 p.m. (we will call parents on our way back).

Girls should be dressed in jeans, socks, and sneakers. They should wear layers on top that they can take off when the weather warms up. The first program will be on the beach so it will be a little chilly. If they have a girl scout vest or badge please wear it for our pictures.

All girls will need to bring a bagged lunch with a drink. We will be eating between programs (the first program is a beach ecology program and the second program is a salt marsh program).

The cost is $3 per girl and is due either before or at the time of departure.

CHECKLIST FOR SATURDAY (girls will not be able to attend unless they have the items below):

- All paperwork filled in? (permission slip and carpool waiver)

- Proper dress (jeans, socks, sneakers, layered tops, girl scout vest/sash - optional)

- Lunch (with drink)

- Money: $3

Swim Badge Update

I followed up on our swim badge order was told they have been back ordered. I got a call that they are expected in this week and they will send out as soon as they come in.

Once they come in they will be passed out to girls at our meeting. Thank you for your patience!

Sea Turtle Event - THIS SATURDAY

Just a reminder that this Saturday, October 16th is the Sea Turtle event at Hunting Island.

Time: Meet at Mossy Oaks at 10 a.m. with a firm departure time of 10:15 a.m. Girls will be returning anywhere between 2-3 p.m. (we will make phone calls as we get ready to leave Hunting Island). All girls must have someone to pick them up at Mossy Oaks (if you need to make other arrangements, please talk to one of the troop leaders).

Permission Slips: Signed permission slips will be required for all girls.

Dress: Girls must wear jeans and sneakers. We are recommending a white shirt and their girl scout sash or vest if they have one (if not...no worries...jeans and a white shirt is fine).

Transportation: We will carpool as much as possible. Those girls riding with other parents will be required to sign a waiver at drop off.

Food: Girls will eat lunch at approximately 1 p.m. at the base of the lighthouse. Please pack a lunch and drink for your daughter. We recommend a light snack prior to leaving due to the later lunch time.

If time permits we might explore the beach or climb the lighthouse. We will not be swimming (so no swimsuits or towels please!).

Turtle Program at Hunting Island - Oct. 16th

Our Girl Scout service area (363) has organized a FREE turtle program at Hunting Island State Park on Saturday, October 16th at 11 a.m. The program will last approximately 2 hours and would be followed up with lunch at the beach (please bring your own lunch).

Girls will earn a Sea Turtle "Try-It" badge unique to Girl Scouts in this area.

They are strongly strongly strongly encouraging car pooling to keep parking costs down.

This is a great Girl Scout (and educational) opportunity for the girls and we hope we can get a group from our troop to go.

Information will go home with the troop this Friday (Oct. 8th). Please return as soon as possible so we can give a head count. Thank you!

November Event - MARK YOUR CALENDARS

I am very excited to annouce that we have booked an event, to coincide with our Wildlife Badge, with the Coastal Discovery Museum for Saturday, November 13th.

The tentative agenda is as follows (with more details to come):

10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Beach Field Study

11:30 - 12:30 a.m. Bagged Lunch

1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Salt Marsh Explorers

The event is going to be led by the Director of Eduction and excellent teacher and wildlife educator (and a good friend of Mrs. Heatons).

The cost will be $3 per person (our troop will off set the full cost with cookie sale money from last year). We strongly encourage parents to have the girls earn the money through chores :)

As we get closer to the date, we will post more details. Until then....mark your calendar and start earning that $3!

Swimming Fun

We just completed our first badge (yea!) Girl's completed the following list of swimming tasks to earn their swimming badge:

- Watch a water safety video

- Recall three water safety tips

- Wear a PFD and pull someone out of the water with it

- Treadwater for 1 minute

- Cooperate with someone trying to rescue you

- Rescue someone without getting in the pool

- Come up with a buddy check call and practice use it

- Glide Swim

- Kick Swim

- Crawl Swim

- Back Stroke

- Side Stroke

- Jump in the water

- Bring something up from the bottom of the pool

- Dive in the pool (if safe)

- Move in the water like an animal

Good job girls (and thanks to the parent volunteers who helped us out!).

Swimming Badge

The first badge we will be working on will be the Junior swimming badge. We will use the YMCA pool on Saturday, September 18th from 2:30 - 4:30 p.m. Girls will need to bring their swim suit and towel. We will provide a snack and drink.

Information will go home with students at next Friday's meeting.
